The Cloud, certainly, but which one ?

There are several types of Cloud Computing services. We can categorise them into three distinct typologies : Private, Public & Hybrid Clouds.

All Cloud services groups, operates and share physical resources such as storage or processors to leverage scalable services over a network. The differences lie in the company that provides these offerings. To develop your Cloud strategy, it is necessary to define the degree of autonomy and security you want.

Private Cloud
By default, a "Private Cloud" is conceived as a set of computing services and resources available and accessible via the Internet or a private internal network to a limited number of users rather than the general public.

A Private Cloud provider is by nature a rather local player, which has its own infrastructure that will operate and share in order to deliver the hosted services. We can consider the Private Cloud approach as a more customised delivery which brings many advantages, especially in terms of security and data durability. Like the Public Cloud, the Private Cloud brings a number of advantages such as self-service, scalability and elasticity of its infrastructure. With a Private Cloud located in Switzerland, by definition, you know who you are working with, to which company you are entrusting your data, and above all you are guaranteed the applicable legal framework for the protection and processing of your data.

When choosing a Private Cloud partner, it is important to choose a company with the ISO27001 certification, and where possible, request a visit to the data centres operated by the hosting provider.

In terms of security and confidentiality, Private Cloud environments deliver a higher level of security as a result of the company's firewalls and hosting, ensuring that all operations and data are not accessible to third party providers.

If you opt for the public model alongside multinationals such as Microsoft, Google or Amazon, you do not get any guidance, support or troubleshooting with the solutions. Although it is easily accessible, you are totally autonomous and independent. This strategy requires technical skills that must be seeked out from competent integrators.

The main advantage of Public Cloud solutions is the ease of access and deployment, but also the connectivity and data accessibility between solutions (e.g. Microsoft365).

On the other hand, the most notorious disadvantages or risks lies in the difficulty of a possible exit and recovery of your data. It is also important to be aware of the fact that in terms of security, durability and confidentiality of data, a Public Cloud strategy brings with it its share of constraints and limitations (Cloud Act, Patriot Act, relationship with an international company, etc.).
Public Cloud
The "Public Cloud" is defined as all services and computing resources offered by third-party providers directly via the Internet to the general public. These services can be free or sold on demand, so that customers only have to pay for what they actually use.
Hybrid Cloud
The "Hybrid Cloud" is an approach that combines a Private Cloud with one or more Public Cloud services through a management software. With a Hybrid strategy, an organisation gets the best of both worlds : optimising the security and privacy of its data while retaining the ability to extend its services to the Public Cloud when necessary.

With the Hybrid Cloud, get the best of both Public and Private Clouds at the same time : keep the high availability, elasticity and limitless scalability of the Public Cloud while keeping control of sensitive applications and data on a Private Cloud.

By following a Hybrid Cloud strategy, this implies the close relationship between at least two types of Cloud services. In this concept, a link is created between these different types of Cloud services, which greatly facilitates the portability of data and applications

By its nature, the Hybrid Cloud offers greater flexibility by moving workloads between Cloud solutions as needs change or costs vary.

Hybrid Cloud services are powerful and very attractive to businesses because they offer increased control over the storage of sensitive data, while providing native access to Public Cloud services. The needs of organisations are continually evolving. With the Hybrid Cloud, IT services and infrastructures are more agile and can be more easily re-engineered to meet changing business needs.
